Finance and commercial alignment: building your business partnering function without chaos
CFOs talk about business partnering constantly—but most finance organizations still operate in silos, reacting to business partner requests rather than shaping strategy. This session tackles the operational reality: how to embed finance deep in commercial decision-making, build effective partnerships with sales, product, and marketing leaders, and create a finance team structure that actually scales this approach. We'll explore the specific models separating finance teams into strategic partners versus operational support; how to staff business partnering roles (who they are, what they do, how they're different from traditional finance controllers); and how to establish monthly business reviews that drive decisions rather than just report actuals. You'll see real examples of sales finance, product finance, and marketing finance functions and the KPIs they track. This session is for CFOs ready to move finance beyond reporting and scorekeeping into true partnership and value creation. Key takeaways: - Business partner role design: job descriptions, hiring criteria, and skill sets for dedicated finance partners embedded in commercial functions - MBR framework and cadence: monthly business review structure, agenda templates, and decision-making protocols that actually influence strategy - Finance team operating model: how to balance strategic partnering roles against transactional finance without leaving operational execution vulnerable
